Because cows tend to eat without chewing, Cow Magnets are used by Dairy Farmers and Veterinarians to guard against Hardware Disease. While grazing in the paddock, cows consume everything from grass and dirt to nails, staples and bits of rusted fencing wire (also known as tramp iron). Tramp iron can lodge in the honeycombed walls of the cow's reticulum, which puts surrounding organs at risk and causes irritation and inflammation, known as Hardware Disease. The cow then loses her appetite and subsequently her milk output, and her ability to put on weight. Cow magnets help prevent this disease by attracting stray metal from around the rumen and reticulum and are usually administered to calves at branding time via a plastic tube in the oesophagus.
