Tāne Mahuta Pounamu Sculpture – Growth & Guardianship
Carved by Jackson Ropata from deep-green Kawakawa pounamu, this sculpture portrays Tāne Mahuta, god of the forest and giver of life. Flowing carved lines evoke roots and branches reaching into Papatūānuku (Earth Mother), while pāua-shell eyes embody vision and spiritual presence. Fully carved, Tāne’s face features defined brows and high cheekbones, lending life like mana. A quartz base and locally gathered driftwood ground the piece in its whenua (land), honouring its whakapapa (genealogy). Through traditional techniques, Ropata style of carving infuses the sculpture with mauri (life force) inviting wairua (spirit) into any space.
As a kaitiaki (guardian) of the forest, Tāne Mahuta brings protection, growth, and connection to nature—making this taonga ideal for housewarmings, graduations, or milestones needing grounding and inspiration.
