Notched Toki Hapopo Medium Pounamu Pendant, Black Binding

Carved from Hapopo pounamu by Ironpan, a mother-and-son carving duo based on the West Coast. A one-off size medium Toki, its clouded green tones carrying brown marbling through the stone.

The Toki takes the form of the traditional adze, worn as a mark of strength, determination and courage, carrying the mana of its wearer. Once an essential tool for Māori and traditionally worn by rangatira as a sign of power and wisdom, it endures as a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. The carved notches follow a traditional Māori carving practice, historically representing whakapapa and the passing of wisdom between generations; today they may also represent whānau members or loved ones.

Finished on an adjustable black cord and presented in an eco-friendly box, accompanied by cards detailing its meaning and care, a truly cherished taonga.
