Roimata Pounamu Pendant - 2

Hand-crafted roimata pendant

Approximately 10 x 3cm

He mea tahito te roimata pounamu. I kitea tēnei momo taonga i ngā taonga tūturu o te
Māori - hei taonga kakī, hei taonga taringa hoki.

It could be argued that a pounamu roimata, worn either as a neck pendant or an earring, is one of the oldest objects of jewellery worn by our tīpuna. In pre-European times our jewellery was not overly carved or intricate but was of a simple design that often showcased the beauty of the stone in which it was carved. The roimata pendants and earrings that we make seek to honour this kōrero and these taonga are a reminder to me to keep things simple – for there is a real beauty in simplicity and ‘clean lines’ in a taonga. Its also about honouring tradition and forms that our tīpuna worked with.

Ko ngā taonga ruruku he tohu o te rurukutanga o ngā tangata hei iwi kotahi

Lashed or bound pendants represent the binding together of people as one. These taonga are appropriate for whānau, workmates or other collectives where unity is important.
