The kōauau is a Maori made musical instrument. The carver is of Ngāti Kahungungu/ Tūwharetoa descent, and a graduate of the Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, Rotorua.
Kōauau are a traditional type of cross-blown flute. They were generally made of wood, bone or a species of kelp. This kōauau carved by James Davidson is made of wood and has three wenewene (finger holes).
This kōauau is made from native tōtara wood.
