Nā James Davidson of Carve It
The porotiti is a Maori made musical instrument. The carver is of Ngāti Kahungungu/ Tūwharetoa descent, and a graduate of the Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, Rotorua.
Porotiti means to revolve, spin, rotate or twirl. This instrument is a disc with two holes through which a string is threaded and used to make the disc spin. When the porotiti spins, it creates a humming sound. The porotiti was traditionally used over the puku of hapū māmā and during childbirth - among other uses.
This porotiti is made from native tōtara wood.
