Matariki mā Puanga acknowledges both the Matariki (Pleiades) and Puanga (Rigel) stars, which different iwi observe to mark the Māori New Year. While regions may follow different stars and traditions, the celebration shares common themes - honouring the past, celebrating the present, and looking to the future. The 2025 theme is about inclusion, unity, and embracing diversity.
