- Two of the five Boulder Bank baches are the centerpiece this unique work, the Inkster's bach (blue) and the bright red bach. Featuring a calm day with the outgoing tide leaving its mark on the boulders.
This stunning piece captures a calm day on the iconic Boulder Bank, with the outgoing tide gently retreating, leaving its mark on the smooth, rounded boulders. The focal point of this artwork is the Inkster's bach, painted in striking blue, and the vibrant red bach, two of the remaining five baches that stand proudly on the spit.
The Boulder Bank, known in Māori as Te Taero a Kereopa , is a naturally formed 13.5 km spit that extends westward from Glenduan. This unique geological feature is not only a fisherman’s paradise, teeming with kingfish, snapper, blue cod, and kahawai but also a place of solitude and rugged beauty. The seaward edge is dotted with rock pools and reefs, offering a glimpse into the thriving marine life. Occasionally, bronze whaler sharks patrol these waters, adding a touch of wildness to this tranquil scene.
Despite its picturesque appearance, life on the Boulder Bank is harsh. The baches that line the spit are isolated, with no running water, no electricity, and minimal shelter provided by the few stunted pōhutukawa trees. In 2021, this remote community was further diminished when one of the six original baches was lost to a fire, leaving only five standing.
