One Tree Hill, or Maungakiekie, is a prominent volcanic landmark, and was once the largest Māori pā in the country. The original native tree was cut down by a settler in 1852, with the replacement pine tree being attacked by Māori activists in 1994 and 2000, resulting in the tree being removed for safety reasons. Replacement, eco sourced tōtara and pōhutukawa trees were planted during a ceremony in 2016. The obelisk at the summit is a memorial, erected in accordance with the will of the late Sir John Logan Campbell, in admiration of the achievements and character of the Māori people.
