Walter Peak stands above Lake Wakatipu at a height of 1800 metres. It takes its name from Cecil Walter Rees, the son of early explorer and surveyor, William Gilbert Rees. At the base of the mountain is the Colonel’s Homestead, on the Walter Peak High Country Farm – one of the first farms set up in the region. Many visit this each year, as it is the destination of the iconic TSS Earnslaw steam ship.
