Established in 1828 and still owned by the Mitchell family, Springbank is one of Scotch whisky’s great custodians of traditional distilling. Based in Campbeltown, once known as the “Whisky Capital of the World", the distillery remains extraordinarily self-sufficient, carrying out every stage of whisky production on site. Barley is traditionally floor malted, kilned, milled and mashed before extended fermentation in wooden washbacks and Springbank’s distinctive 2.5-times distillation through three copper pot stills. The wash still is heated by a live flame, helping create the weight, texture and character for which the spirit is renowned. Casks are matured and the whisky is ultimately bottled at Springbank without chill filtration or artificial colouring. This uncompromising approach preserves a style prized for its oily texture, gentle peat, maritime character and wonderfully idiosyncratic Campbeltown personality. Special Features
Springbank 18 Year Old occupies a particularly coveted place within the distillery’s range, combining significant age with enough vitality to preserve the unmistakable character of the underlying spirit. Produced in comparatively limited quantities, each annual release can feature a different cask composition, giving enthusiasts the opportunity to discover subtle variations while retaining Springbank’s signature lightly peated, oily and coastal identity. Traditional floor maltings, extended fermentation, direct-fired distillation and the unusual 2.5-times distillation regime distinguish it from conventionally produced Scotch, while natural colour and non-chill filtration preserve its authentic texture and appearance. For collectors, these evolving annual releases make Springbank 18 not simply an aged whisky, but an individual expression of one of Scotland’s most fiercely traditional distilleries. Ageing & Maturation
The 2025 release brings together whisky matured for 18 years across a carefully judged combination of 50% bourbon, 45% sherry and 5% rum casks. Bourbon wood contributes brightness, honeyed sweetness and fruit, while the substantial sherry component builds darker berries, treacle, spice and chocolate. A small proportion of rum casks adds another subtle layer of rounded sweetness and complexity. Matured in Campbeltown’s cool coastal environment, the three cask influences gradually integrate with Springbank’s lightly peated spirit, creating a mature yet vibrant whisky where fruit, richness, gentle smoke and savoury maritime character remain beautifully balanced.
