Damar Tree Resin
We're making available a limited amount of our damar tree resin - the same resin we use in our beeswax food wraps and DIY food wrap blend.
This is a natural tree resin harvested from Shorea sp. trees grown in Asia and India, and is harvest from the trees by tapping - cutting into the bark of the tree and collecting the resin as it exudes from the tree. This is a top quality, light coloured and food grade resin.
Damar resin is a key ingredient in encaustic art, where beeswax is mixed with damar tree resin and pigments. The damar raises the melting point of the beeswax and makes a harder finished product, and adds a luminous finish to the work.
Damar tree resin is also used in batik fabric painting, where adding the damar to the beeswax or other waxes also raises the melting point of the mixture and allows for crisper lines.
Why use Gum instead of Pine Resin in our beeswax wraps?
We chose damar resin for our beeswax food wraps instead of pine resin because Damar has a clearer colour, which lets the colours of the fabric stay truer, and damar has no flavour, so does not taint the wraps at all. Pine resin also carries an allergy risk for some people, which Damar does not!
As a natural product with minimal processing, there will be variation in colour and inclusion of some plant material (which can be filtered or settled out once melted).
Note: also known as Gum Damar, Dammar Resin, Gum Dammar, Damar Gum Resin,.
