- Wear lab coat, gloves, and safety glasses.
- Label final solution: “Bromine Water 2% – Toxic / Corrosive".
Method
Place the clean 1L amber glass bottle on a balance and record its tare weight (empty weight). The final solution must be made up to tare weight 1000 g.
Add 28 g sodium bromide 46208-100g into the bottle. Rinse in any remaining solid with DI water.
Add 22 g sodium chlorite 46608-100g , rinsing in with DI water.
Add DI water to bring the liquid level to approximately 500 mL. Swirl gently until dissolved.
Carefully add 180 g of 4.9% hydrochloric acid 27238-P-1L. Bromine will begin forming at this stage.
Quickly make the solution up to the final required mass (tare 1000 g) with DI water.
Cap the bottle securely and invert to mix.
Notes
- The method yields approximately 500 mL of 2% bromine water.
- Store in a cool, dark place in the amber bottle with the lid tightly sealed.
- Dispose of unused solution according to hazardous waste protocols.
