Black Spotted Boxfish

Spotted Boxfish – Ostracion meleagris

The Spotted Boxfish is a unique and eye-catching addition to marine aquariums, easily recognised by its distinctive box-shaped body and bold spotted patterning. Juveniles and females typically feature a dark body covered in white spots, while males display brighter colours with blue and yellow highlights. Their unusual movement and gentle nature make them a standout species for hobbyists wanting something truly different.

Despite their peaceful temperament, boxfish require stable, mature aquariums and careful handling, as they can release toxins when severely stressed. With proper care and a calm environment, they are hardy, active, and full of personality. Care Information

Temperament: Peaceful. Best kept with calm tankmates; avoid aggressive species that may cause stress.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, small marine pellets, finely chopped seafood, and algae-based foods.
Tank Size: Minimum 250–300L with gentle flow and plenty of open space.
Reef Compatibility: Generally reef safe, though individuals may pick at sessile invertebrates. Use caution with small crustaceans.
Notes: Avoid keeping with overly boisterous fish. Ensure excellent water quality and stable parameters. As with all boxfish, handle stress carefully to prevent toxin release.
