Janss' Pipefish

Important: Janss' Pipefish require a highly specific environment, similar to seahorses. Low flow systems with peaceful tankmates is essential. They are currently feeding on frozen brine & mysis shrimp, supplemented with live baby brine shrimp and they should be offered this daily or at least a couple of times per week. Please do not purchase unless you can provide the appropriate care and environment. Thank you.

The Janss' Pipefish (Doryrhamphus janssi) is a striking and highly sought-after species in the flagtail pipefish family, known for its vibrant coloration and peaceful nature. With a slender body reaching up to 14 cm in length, this pipefish displays a vivid orange midsection, contrasting beautifully with its electric blue head and tail. The fan-shaped tail fin is particularly eye-catching, marked with black and white bands and a distinctive central spot. Native to sheltered coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia and northern Australia, the Janss' Pipefish is commonly found darting in and out of caves and under coral ledges, often in bonded pairs.

In captivity, Janss' Pipefish require a carefully maintained reef environment. A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended, though larger volumes are preferred to allow for more stable water conditions and adequate space. The aquarium should be aquascaped with plenty of live rock, hiding places, and gentle to moderate flow. This species thrives in stable reef parameters, including a temperature range of 24–28°C, a salinity of 1.022–1.025, and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4. These pipefish are known for their role as cleaner fish in the wild, picking parasites off other reef inhabitants, and exhibit fascinating behaviors when housed with compatible tankmates.
