Speckled Damsel
The Pomacentrus bankanensis, commonly known as the fish, is a hardy and attractive species native to the Indo-Pacific, including the waters around Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Great Barrier Reef. It features a dusky blue to olive body with fine, iridescent speckling and subtle yellowish or golden tones near the fins. Reaching around 7–8 cm in length, this damselfish brings both personality and resilience to reef and fish-only aquariums, making it a popular choice among beginner and experienced aquarists alike.
fish are generally bold and territorial, particularly as they mature. They do best in aquariums of at least 100 litres, with plenty of live rock and crevices to establish their own territory. While their aggressive tendencies are mild compared to other damselfish species, they can become combative toward smaller or more docile tankmates if space is limited. For best results, house them with other semi-aggressive or similarly sized fish and avoid placing multiple males in close quarters unless ample space is available. They are completely reef-safe and will not nip at corals or invertebrates.
Feeding the fish is simple, as they readily accept a wide range of foods. Offer a varied diet that includes high-quality marine pellets or flakes, along with frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other protein-rich options to maintain vibrant coloration and immune health. They thrive in stable conditions with temperatures between 24–27°C, salinity at 1.023–1.025, and a pH of 8.1–8.4. Known for their hardiness and low maintenance, Pomacentrus bankanensis is an excellent addition for aquarists looking for a tough yet colorful reef-safe fish with a bit of attitude.
