The national Māori flag was developed by members of a group named Te Kawariki in 1989. On 6 February 1990, the group unveiled the flag at Waitangi.

The flag was launched shortly before Waitangi Day 1990 during a hīkoi from Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Rēinga) to Waitangi. The flag was called the "tino rangatiratanga" flag before it was voted as the National Māori flag.

On Waitangi Day 2010 the national Māori flag flew for the first time over the Auckland Harbour Bridge. It also flew at Parliament, Premier House, the National War Memorial and on a number of other government buildings on that day.

Please find more information about "Principles of flying the national Māori flag" and "Protocols for flying the national Māori flag with the New Zealand Flag" on the government website.
