Mono Watt - words + noise (Vinyl)
Mono Watt's 'words noise' features the collaboration between three Tāmaki Makaurau based artists, poet, James Littlewood and musician/designers Ross Cunningham and John Pain. The recording captures James' poetry with live improvised guitar accompaniment from Ross. It was was then handed over to John, who did some fine tuning via the addition of electronic touches and minimal overdubs.
The trio have created a genuine artifact which Graham Reid, in his recent review of the album on his 'Elsewhere' website, places nicely within a cultural context.
" Elsewhere has long been of the opinion that not enough poetry and spoken word is recorded in this country and looks back fondly to albums by Sam Hunt (Bottle to Battle to Death), James K Baxter reading his own work, the poets in performance collections two decades ago and those albums of poems set to music which Charlotte Yates curated (Baxter, Tuwhare, Mansfield)..and also Sam Hunt with David Kilgour. These may not be big sellers (or even modest sellers) but they are important because they document that moment just as rock, pop, rap and other albums do." He then finishes up by saying.."As we often say, not for everyone. but we're very pleased it exists at all."
This is available as a limited edition of 100 numbered copies, each in a lovingly hand stamped card-stock cover with photo-print insert, each one a slight variation.
