Girl, In A Savage World is the stunning debut album by one of Aotearoa’s most gifted songwriters, the enigmatic Theia.

Those who have followed Christchurch-born, LA-based Theia’s musical journey over the past five years, including the success of her prize-winning alt-folk project TE KAAHU, will already know the beauty of her voice and the strength of her songwriting. Girl, In A Savage World is a natural progression, in which she fearlessly treads uncharted ground, while imparting poignant messages. Theia is a fierce proponent for the revitalisation of Māori culture and language and is celebrated for weaving her native tongue into her politically charged anthems.

The songs on Girl, In A Savage World blend Theia's ethereal vocals and haunting harmonies with traditional Māori instrumentation and contemporary soundscapes to create a unique sound that defy categorisation. The album also features a collaboration with American avant-folk luminary Jolie Holland.

‘The record has been a long time coming, but I really wanted to take my time with these songs. I’ve pored over every lyric, every melody, and every harmony’, says Theia, who co-produced the record with Abraham Kunin (TE KAAHU, Home Brew).

Theia will be touring Girl, In A Savage World in New Zealand in early 2026.
