If you're currently using the optical sensor on your smart watch to monitor heart rate, we highly recommend upgrading to a chest strap to get more consistent and accurate data to guide your training. It is widely accepted that watches using a wrist based optical sensor give less accurate readings, and chest straps still remain the "gold standard" for monitoring heart rate. In a recently published paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that none of the wrist based devices tested were able to offer a reliable reading during moderate exercise. The authors went on to say: “Electrode-containing chest monitors should be used when accurate HR measurement is imperative."
