DIKO - Skate Deck | Freestyle

This skate deck by New Zealand artist DIKO is one of over 40 one-off original skatedecks that were designed by artists for Limn Gallery's first show of 2023 - FREESTYLE.

This one-of-a-kind original work painted using acrylic on board. This work has been painted on the grip side.

Featuring over 50 talented artists from around New Zealand, FREESTYLE features a blend of original artwork on skateboard decks, sculptures, and a series of photographs by award winning photographer, Petra Leary.

This unique and dynamic showcase of creativity is a celebration of the intersection of skateboarding and art, two distinct forms of self-expression that have long been intertwined. FREESTYLE aims to highlight the unique ways in which artists have interpreted the relationship between these two forms of expression.

Each skatedeck in the show is a canvas for the artist to express their own unique style, techniques and perspectives, resulting in a diverse and eclectic collection of pieces.

About The Artist: DIKO, aka Gabrial Tiongson completed his Visual Arts degree and Masters in Creative Practice in Unitec Institute of Technology. Formal study shifted his art practice from primarily ink on paper to mixed media on canvas. He paints to construct and deconstruct his paintings to further feed into future work. Formal study also allowed him to criticize and reflect on his loss of identity and culture. This turmoil turned to opportunity when he was able to embrace his hybrid nature. His works are charged by his childhood affinities and presented through his experience of various cultures.
