The Story Behind the Artwork

One of two species that inhabit the New Zealand coast, the Red Spiny Crayfish (or kōura) is one to spot while diving or snorkelling.

It’s not until you study these crustaceans how detailed they are. The bumpy exterior and spiky antennae are made up of lots of colours, deep reds and violets but also oranges that are also scattered across the legs and tail. This crayfish was intriguing to study and paint.
