The sudden snort of breath near the kayak announces the presence of a sleek body swimming gracefully alongside. We’ve been slipping quietly through crystal clear water up the channel, gliding over sunken tree trunks and under overhanging branches as we work our way towards Bell Topper Falls. The sea lion keeps a watchful pace and it fishes as it goes, weaving its way before us towards the falls, and startling a kererū.
