Paula Coulthard’s Four Eels is inspired by the long-fin tuna that inhabit the streams and waterways around her Wairarapa home.

Paula often watches a large female tuna moving effortlessly through the water, an experience that has shaped her fascination with these remarkable creatures. Her observations reveal a very different side to their quiet, elegant presence—when food appears, the tuna can move with surprising speed and power.

This work captures Paula’s interest in the contrast between the tuna’s graceful movement and their strength and determination. Her distinctive approach combines observation with abstraction, creating a striking interpretation of one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most remarkable freshwater species.
