Hoiho means “noisy shouter" in te reo Māori, which is perfect because these birds are known for their piercing calls and marathon endurance. Imagine this: they swim 25 kilometres offshore, dive up to 200 times, and then waddle 700 metres to feed their hungry chicks. So, if you see one in the wild, maybe save the selfie request.
