Jon Tootill (1951- )

Jon Tootill (Ngāi Tahu, Pākehā) is a contemporary painter celebrated as a master of contemporary geometric abstraction in Aotearoa.

Tootill grew up in suburban Hamilton, in one of New Zealand's mass suburban housing projects of the fifties and sixties. Tootill depicts these modular designed pre-cut homes in flat colour planes and stylised detail. Home ownership has increasingly become an unattainable aspiration for many, and Tootill places his houses in a dreamscape with an artificial façade of contentment and prosperity that home ownership will supposedly attain.
