MARAMA O TE NGAKAU
- a finely carved inlaid drop pendant for lovers of art to wear! Hand carved by Andrew Doughty.
The artist's of this piece follows.
This simple Taonga is named Marama o te ngakau which means Light of heart. It is
part of the Morning Dew series. It is made from Kopukopu pounamu.
It is based on the shape of the Tomairaki (Tōmairangi), which is reminiscent of a
dew drop.
"Ka patapata iho taku whakaakoranga āno he ua, ka maturuturu iho taku kupu ano
he tomairangi (tomairaki), me te ua punehunehu ki runga i te tipu hou."
This is interpreted to "My teaching drops like rain, my words trickle forth like
dew and the misty rain on new shoots".
As such, this is an expression of great wisdom. Wisdom that leads to life. This poem
was gifted to me by the late Kaumātua and Tohonga Na te Upoko Runaka o Te Runaka
ki Otautahi o Kai Tahu, Rev'd Maurice Manawaroa Gray MNZM, LTh,JP.
The tomairaki shape contains an inlay of jasper at the top with a thin line of brass
in-between. This represents that there is a great mystery above our material world.
The lines on the carving symbolises a river of living water. It takes a vast collection
of dew to form a river. Therefore, this shows us our connection to the vast tapestry
of life.
Tomairaki such as this make a wonderful touch stone as their tactile surface is
comforting to rub. Over time, when used in this way, the oils transferred onto this
stone will gradually deepen the sheen, complexion, and lustre of this piece.
This is a medium sized piece, intricately carved and beautiful to wear.
a marvellous piece that will certainly draw attention and comment.
