HANNYA
- A traditional Play Mask.
A spectacular piece of wearable art for all lovers of traditional Japanese art and carving! This is a magnificent little piece, hand crafted from the tine of a Deer antler. This is a very traditional mask design used in Japanese Noh theatre.
This particular design is thought to represent a figure that is tormented and demonic, but also sorrowful. The art of this play is the subtle movement of the mask which changes its look - front on it appears angry and is frightening, if it is tilted down the face appears sad and tormented. These are a fantastic, traditional carved design with a lot of history and meaning.
This has been beautifully carved by Fumio Noguchi. A one-off Bone Hannya mask - a memorable little work of art!
Take a close look at the photos to appreciate the detail of this piece. The eyes are carved through which gives the mask a piercing stare.
This is a medium sized pendant, but looks fantastic when worn. We will supply this with a hand-plaited, adjustable black cord.
