Phlomis italica
also known as woolly sage is a striking foliage perennial or small shrub that has narrow felted wooly, grey green, upstanding leaves. The hooded flowers are a beautiful lilac-pink almost a marshmallow pink, that are carried in whorls around the stems in the leaf axils in late summer, although ours often will start flowering mid spring. Plants will thrive in a sunny, sheltered site, in well-drained soil, plants will also cope with a little bit of shade. Fast growing. Plants are drought tolerant once established, but do not like wet feet, so you can add gravel in with your soil to assist with drainage.
Remove any old, tired or dead leaves and flowers in spring - flower stems look attractive in the winter garden. We cut our plants back in early spring, and encourages new growth. Do not cut back in autumn or winter. Plants can be divided in spring.
A beautiful plant for creating that informal, cottage style effect.
