Boltonia asteroides | White

One of our most loved plants when people visit our gardens, people always say "that is stunning, what is it?"

Boltonia asteroides also known as a False Aster provides a bright white presence from late summer until the first frosts, a time when the predominant shades are very autumnal. It is, in fact, one of the last flowering plants in the lead up to winter.

Hundreds of aster-like blossoms on a single plant are about 2.5cm across and feature yellow centres surrounded by narrow white ray petals. Narrow grey-green leaves and sturdy stems add to the plant's visual appeal.

False Aster prefers damp to medium soil conditions and will perform to their best in either full sun or partial shade. Ours however are placed in quite dry areas of the garden and still perform particularly well and of course a layer of mulch will help to retain moisture through the hot summers.

Plants tend to flower more profusely in moist sunny sites, and we find that the height can vary greatly from 1 metre - 1.5 metres depending on soil moisture. Standing water is even tolerated for short periods. It is rhizomatous by nature so will spread, but not aggressively and it is easily split. Many beneficial insects are attracted to this stunning plant, including butterflies, bees, moths, and beetles. Plants will self-sow if happy.

Fabulous for cutting so is a perfect choice for the cutting garden as lasts well in a vase and floral work.

Cut back to the ground after flowering.

It looks striking with Solidago, other Asters, grasses and the stunning Eupatorium all of which we sell at various times throughout the growing season.
