Penstemon Blackbird

A small growing evergreen perennial with nice glossy, strappy leaves. Flower spikes have heavily laden dark plummy coloured tubular flowers with white throats from early summer.

Plants perform best in full sun with a well-draining soil, and should be protected from hard frost.

The best way to keep your plants looking great is to give them a light trim before winter, leaving most of the stems as protection for the basal shoots. When the basal shoots grow away strongly in Spring and are about 5 to 10cm long, trim away all the previous year’s growth, and this will ensure a fresh flush of growth.

Penstemons also make a great cut flower so are a wonderful choice for the cutting patch, and this pure white variety will make a beautiful contribution to your white garden or in your mixed border.
