Hide Your Devil Horns

Artist Statement:

The woman I admire is not a specific famous figure or character, but rather the countless ordinary women who were born in times when women's rights were limited.

They quietly endured their lives with strength and helped pave the way for the generations that followed.

The woman in this work is wearing a tsunokakushi, a traditional Japanese bridal headdress. The word tsunokakushi literally means "horn-hider"—a reference to the horns of an ogre, which symbolize anger. By concealing these horns, the bride was expected to embody obedience and humility as a wife.

But even today, are we still hiding our horns?
