Hide Your Face
Artist Statement:
The woman I admire is not a specific famous figure or character, but rather the countless ordinary women who were born in times when women's rights were limited. They quietly endured their lives with strength and helped pave the way for the generations that followed.
The woman in this work is wearing a wataboshi, a traditional Japanese wedding headdress. The wataboshi symbolizes the bride's intent to hide her face from everyone except the groom until the wedding ceremony.
But was it only her face she kept hidden beneath the veil?
