The Unicorn in Captivity
one of seven individual tapestries known as "The Unicorn Tapestries" which were found in the Netherlands dating between 1495 and 1505. These tapestries are among the most complex and beautiful works of art from the middle ages to survive to this day. Woven in luxurious fine wool and silk with silver and gilded threads, the tapestries vividly depict scenes about the hunt for the majestic and elusive unicorn. depicts a beautiful white unicorn tethered to a pomegranate tree surrounded by a wooden fence and a flourishing field of wild orchids and complimentary spring flowers. The unicorn although tethered is graceful and peaceful, laying on the flower laden ground, with a fence low enough to leap over and with a loose enough tether the unicorn could easily escape if he wished. a masterful piece of 15th century art, with medieval symbolism, a delicate colour palette and captivating imagery which combine to create a remarkable piece of art.
