Bone Tekoteko 80mm BA306

Brand New Item

A tekoteko is a carved human figure that traditionally represents an important ancestor.

It symbolises:

- Whakapapa — ancestry and family connections
- Mana — strength, authority and prestige
- Protection — watching over people and their home
- Identity and heritage — connection to iwi, hapū and Māori culture

Traditionally, a tekoteko stands at the highest point of a wharenui (meeting house), representing a founding ancestor looking over their descendants. The precise meaning can vary according to the figure and its iwi or carver.
