Cyathea medullaris
also known as Mamaku, is the tallest of New Zealand’s tree ferns, distinguished by its striking black trunk which supports a pale green, umbrella-like canopy.
This majestic fern thrives in full to semi-shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil with plenty of mulch. It benefits from sheltering against wind and requires protection from frost, especially when young.
As an evergreen, Mamaku offers a dramatic presence in shaded garden areas, making it a great choice for adding vertical interest and texture.
