Sophora prostrata
known as the Prostrate Kowhai, is a unique low-growing New Zealand native that forms a compact, dense mound of intertwining, wiry branches. Its intricate, almost sculptural form adds year-round texture and interest to the garden.
This hardy shrub produces small yellow to orange-toned flowers sporadically throughout the year, offering subtle bursts of colour and attracting native birds. Ideal for rock gardens, native borders or containers, it works beautifully as a textural contrast among taller shrubs or groundcovers.
Best grown in full sun to semi-shade, it prefers well-drained soil and is well-suited to exposed or dry areas. A tough and unusual Kowhai, perfect for gardeners wanting something a little different.
