Macropiper excelsum

commonly known as kawakawa, is a distinctive New Zealand native shrub recognised for its heart-shaped leaves and dense, branching habit. Ideal for shaded or sheltered areas, it brings lush texture and greenery to gardens where sunlight is limited.

Traditionally valued by Māori for its medicinal properties, kawakawa has long been used in rongoā Māori (traditional Māori medicine). The leaves and bark have been used to support digestive health, ease toothache and treat cuts, bruises and skin conditions. Its peppery tasting leaves are sometimes brewed as a herbal tea or used in topical applications.

Kawakawa prefers sheltered sites with protection from frost and cold winds. A resilient and culturally significant native plant, it’s perfect for native gardens, understory planting or restoration projects that honour Aotearoa’s natural and cultural heritage.
