Behold Uncertainty
Based in Christchurch, NZ, I have been creating artworks for around 20 years. Most of my artwork during this period has been illustrative and humorous. However, in the last few years I've chosen a variety of other styles of work, in particular abstracts. I'm captured by mark making, negative space, small details and a style that can blur into other images. These paintings are a chance to lose control, keep things simple, tell an open story, have a dance, throw some colour around, make some marks, let the painting speak, and simply relax. Expression completed.
'' is aimed at being visually stimulating. My wish is that the viewer will interpret this how they see fit. It may simply be an abstract. It may give the impression of a landscape. It may also reveal other meanings to you. For me, I see a horizon/seascape/hills in the distance, with elements of a brooding sky above. The colour punch in the middle could be reflections from the water, or symbolise an urban patch caught amongst the intense shadows of the foreground. This image has a dusk feel to it, in that a new day will come. The mark making, layers and texture of the paint all capture elements of intrigue. This artwork was created towards the start of the Covid19 pandemic in 2019 that caused havoc with the world for a few years, and ongoing. I believe it is an apt name for this visual artwork, with the viewer being uncertain if this is simply an abstract, or a landscape, or some other visual element. On a global scale however, the title takes on extreme relevance - whilst we on a personal, community and national level experience extreme difficulty with illness, death, travel implications and recession. I hope this image stimulates you, in whatever form you wish to look at it.
