The west coast evening light simplified the volcanic shapes of Paritutu and its islands and inspired the series of Back Beach prints made by my father and I in 1974.

The second edition, in 2006, was printed by Artrite and this, by popular demand, is the third edition also printed by Artrite Screenprinting.

Michael Smither CNZM (b. 1939) is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated artists, known for his striking compositions that blend rigorous realism with bold, luminous colour. Painter, printmaker and composer, Michael’s work captures the essence of New Zealand life—from intimate domestic moments to the vast, rugged landscapes of Taranaki.
