Here, Gregor Kregar plays with the role of the unassuming garden
gnome; a common, light-hearted inhabitant of suburban popular
culture. Removed from the domestic setting, Reflective Lullaby is
enlarged and placed on a playful and irregular polyhedron. He looks
reflective (in both senses) as he steps out of his typically kitsch
persona and into a sophisticated new role as guardian of the
Glasshouse. Thoughtfully holding court at the entrance to the
sculpture trail.

Prior to their decorative role adorning gardens and pathways,
gnomes date back to medieval times where they were sacred
gatekeepers; guardians of forests, animals, minerals and precious
metals. It is interesting to note the word ‘gnome’ originates from the
Greek word ‘gnosis’ meaning ‘knowledge’.

As Kregar observes,

“Gnomes are not the heroes of one event but
rather the funny philosophers of everyday life..and I’m interested in
how something that is usually made out of plastic or concrete and is
associated with a low, kitsch aesthetic can be transformed into an
arresting monumental sculpture."
