The Psychosis Chamber Of The Oracle

The Psychosis Chamber of the Oracle, 2012 - 2019
Polystyrene, wood, fibreglass.
2100 x 1250 x 2350mm

This work has been repurposed from a found object: a giant hollowed, disembodied Kevin Smith head from the television show Xena: Warrior Princess. Rohan Wealleans has transformed the form, repainting the skin a silvery blue tone and the golden hair like a giant walnut. A hexagon-shaped door hints at a hidden interior. By recontextualising the found object, Wealleans gives it a new life as The Psychosis Chamber of the Oracle.

Known primarily as a painter, Wealleans is celebrated for his distinctive technique of building up thick surfaces of paint, creating stalactite-like forms, small pyramids, and volcanic protrusions, before carving back into the material. This sculptural approach to paint is echoed in the detailed exterior of the head.

Psychosis Chamber of the Oracle is the largest work the artist has made, evoking the aesthetics of fantasy and science fiction.
