Tyla Te Kanawa-Maxwell is of Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngaitai decent and brought up in Te Arawa attending Kōhanga Reo and Kura Kaupapa in Tūhourangi/Ngāti Wāhiao and Ngāti Whakaue

From the age of ten, Tyla accompanied her mother, Taongahuia Maxwell to weaving wānanga in Te Kuiti, Waitomo, Rotorua and Rotoiti.

Over the years Tyla's passion for weaving grew and in 2022 she graduated with a Bachelor in Māori Art (Raranga) with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.

Artwork Description:

This kete whakaairo has both the star pattern and takitahi to depict the bright shinning stars on the dark blue of the night sky.
This particular star pattern is credited to Sonia Snowdens Matariki pattern.

Inspired by her culture, Tyler Maxwell brings you Kete whakaairo - He whetu purapura, a captivating piece that celebrates her unique Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngaitai ancestry.

From Kōhanga Reo and Kura Kaupapa, to graduating with a Bachelor in Māori Art (Raranga), Tyler's passion and skill for weaving truly shines through in this inspiring exhibition.
