Pīwakawaka - River Matai
- Shannon Turuwhenua
Introducing the Pīwakawaka River Rimu, a uniquely handcrafted piece built from River Rimu wood, finished with danish oil.
The pīwakawaka is known as a messenger, carrying either news of death or the actual death from the gods to the people. Its peculiar flying patterns and bulging eyes are believed to be a result of Māui squeezing the bird for refusing to divulge the location of Mahuika, the fire deity and his ancestress.
Shannon Turuwhenua is a Wood Sculptor based in North Waikato. He is part of a Whanau based Collective (Past Present Future) that covers multiple art disciplines. Shannon creates his art from native and exotic timbers from around the country. Where possible the timber is reclaimed/recycled.
Each piece is handcrafted and as a result, no two pieces are exactly the same Shannon takes inspiration from objects in daily life. Recreating them into larger pieces of art.
