Ruruku - River Matai

The Ruruku is made of Recycled River Matai wood finished in danish oil which has a stunning grain that Shannon wanted to leave as much as possible. The bulk and shape of the piece gives the feel of a shield (protection). Shannon Turuwhenua is a Wood Sculptor based in North Waikato. He is part of a Whanau based Collective (Past Present Future) that covers multiple art disciplines. Shannon creates his art from native and exotic timbers from around the country. Where possible the timber is reclaimed / recycled.

Each piece is handcrafted and as a result no two pieces are exactly the same Shannon takes inspiration from objects in daily life. Recreating them into larger pieces of art.
