Black Kete
- Sue Smythe
Description:
This is a Kete Whakairo Kete which was historically used for special occaisions such as church, weddings or Tangi.
It is woven flat on a table and then joined.
The Kete is woven from Ramoa flax which is grown by the Artist. The handles are plaited from Muka from Taiore flax also grown by the Artist. Both the flax and handles have been dyed with a product used for flax and raffia to give the black colour.
The Kete takes 40 hours from harvesting and preparing to the finished product.
The Artist enjoys exploring patterns using a variety of twills including Taki Tahi, Taki Rua, Whakatutu, and Broken squares, this pattern is often used on mats.
The light and shade of the patterns give an embossed affect.
