Pukaea - Trumpet
- Tim Codyre
The a large wooden instrument carvered in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland, Aotearoa / New Zealand by expert Tim Codyre. It is expertly crafted with a long split hollowed length of wood and a bell shaped end, bound tightly with vine. Ranging in size from smaller examples to instruments up to 2.5 meters long, the Pukaea is most commonly played using the embouchure technique similar to western brass and trumpet instruments.
Skilled players can produce multiple notes and tones, creating a loud and captivating sound known as kōkiri. Interestingly, the Pukaea was not just used as a 'war trumpet', but also played during peaceful occasions like the planting and harvesting of crops, such as kūmara. This treasured instrument has a strong connection to Tāne-mahuta, the Māori atua (deity) of the forests and birds.
