Methyl-Guard
Thorne contains the activated forms of the B vitamins folate (as 5-MTHF), B12 (as methylcobalamin), and B6 (as P5P) along with betaine (trimethylglycine) to support healthy methylation - a simple yet essential biochemical process necessary for maintaining optimal health. provides the essential methyl donor nutrients needed to support healthy methylation to maintain the health of the heart, vasculature, brain, bone, reproductive health and more.
- Provides activated, tissue-ready forms of vitamins B6, folate and B12, ready for immediate use in the body
- Thorne was the first nutritional supplement available to support homocysteine metabolism & the methylation cycle
- Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with aging and a biomarker for cardiovascular & neurological health risks What is methylation?
Methylation is a simple biochemical process. It is the transfer of four atoms collectively referred to as a ‘methyl group’ – comprising one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms (CH3) – from one substance to another. The addition of methyl groups can affect how some molecules act in the body.
When optimal methylation occurs, it has a significant positive impact on many biochemical reactions in the body that regulate the activity of all the major body systems, including cardiovascular, neurological and reproductive health, immune function, energy production, digestion and detoxification.
To maintain an effective methylation cycle, the body needs ready access to ‘methyl donors’ – nutrients capable of readily donating a methyl group to another substance. Active folate (5-MTHF) is the one of the most critical nutrients needed to keep the methylation cycle running smoothly, along with other methyl donors including trimethylglycine (betaine), methyl-B12 (methylcobalamin) and co-factors including vitamin B6. Why is homocysteine balance important?
Maintaining a normal homocysteine level in the blood has joined having normal cholesterol and triglyceride levels as primary objectives for maintaining healthy cardiovascular function. The body's methylation process is key to maintaining a healthy level of homocysteine, as well as necessary to multiple other biochemical processes involving neurotransmitters, detoxification, cardiovascular health, eye health, muscle health, bone health, and redox balance.
Homocysteine is an amino acid naturally produced when the essential amino acid methionine is converted into the non-essential amino acid cysteine - an important nutrient in the body, and particularly essential to produce glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant nutrient. To be recycled to methionine, homocysteine requires a methyl donor from folate, vitamin B12, or betaine, or all three. Deficiencies in vitamin B12, folic acid and vitamin B6 are associated with raised homocysteine levels. Other factors thought to raise levels include a poor diet and poor lifestyle, such as smoking, high coffee or alcohol intake, some prescription medications, as well as some health conditions.
