N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a sulphur-containing amino acid derived from cysteine. It supports the important phase II detoxification pathways of sulphation and glutathione conjugation in the body. This conjugation pathway renders toxins less harmful and supports the formation of master antioxidant glutathione (along with the amino acids glutamine and glycine) to neutralise free radicals, also known as reactive oxygen species, formed through normal detoxification processes. The sulphation process also supports the detoxification of used steroid and thyroid hormones in the body including oestrogen, neurotransmitters such as adrenalin, as well as xenobiotic toxins such as BPA, BHT and other chemicals found in everyday products.
