ABOUT
Roy Campbellās powers are given full rein in this epic poem of the Spanish War.
He is an exultant nationalist and celebrates not only feats of arms but achievements of organisation, making live poetry out of economics and agriculture. He attacks the Marxian concept of life with terrific vigour and brings savage satire to bear on the International Brigades and its left wing sympathisers in England. Unlike most other writers, Campbell is biased by personal experience of both regimes in Spain.
He lived in Toledo as a breaker of horses before the war and was not on any journalistic or political mission. He escaped through the length of Red Spain during the terror and the siege of Alcazar and later returned to the front with the Nationalists.
